The USS LST 393 Veterans Museum is an LST-1-class tank landing ship originally launched in 1942. She is one of only two LSTs to survive in their original configuration.The World War II landing ship is a D-Day veteran of Omaha Beach and two other invasions. During her service she won battle stars for the Sicilian occupation, Salerno landings, and the Invasion of Normandy. She made 75 voyages to foreign shores and was one of the only LSTs to be equipped with an airplane.
During the 1950’s she was given a new name, the MV Highway 16. She also began a new career - shipping automobiles across the Great Lakes.
In the 2000’s the USS LST 393 was extensively renovated by committed veterans, their families and supporters. The ship is now into a veterans museum boasting thousands of artifacts and exhibits; which pay honor to the service of America’s heroes.
Open for tours May through September, during summer months seven days a week 10 a.m.-5p.m. (last ticket sold 4 p.m.) Admission $10 adults, $5 students, group tours available. LST 393 can be rented for sleepovers, special events and business meetings. The ship also hosts “Movies on Deck” after sunset on Fridays June-August.
