A City Built on Timber – Meet the Artists and Dedication
June 30 @ 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The Muskegon City Public Art Initiative reveals “A City Built on Timber”.
The second Muskegon City Public Art Initiative (MCPAI ) sculpture will be installed June 29 and 30, 2020 at the entrance to Heritage Landing. The public is invited to the dedication and a “Meet the Artists” event on June 30th at 5:00 pm.
The sculpture is approximately 22 feet high and weighs 3,000 pounds. It is made of patinated carbon steel, stainless steel, and hand-cast glass. A grid cube at the top will have inserts of deep blue glass and will be lit from within.
Twenty-one artists answered the invitational call sent out last May. Local, regional, state artists received the invitation; as well as a small cadre of national artists. Michigan art institutions, and university and college art departments, were also notified.
Twenty seven submissions gave way to a long review process. In September of 2019 these narrowed down to three finalists. Detroit artists, and brothers, Erik and Israel Nordin were chosen for the commission. A successful fundraising campaign followed and all involved anxiously await the sculpture’s debut.
